Tottenham midfielder Victor Wanyama was honoured by having a street in Tanzania named after him over the weekend, but the gesture appears to have been short-lived.

Wanyama had been on holiday in the African country, and the commercial port city of Dar es Salaam decided to reward the 26-year-old with his own street after winning the Kenyan sports personality award.

But, less than 24 hours alter Tanzania's Ubungo council has removed the sign, insisting official procedures required to rename a street had not been followed.

The street has now been stripped of the new name and returns to being Ubungo Road, which leads to the Kinesi Stadium.

The local mayor, Boniface Jacob, was in attendance at the unveiling ceremony with Wanyama afterwards thanking the residents for the honour and promising a return visit.

"I thank the mayor and residents of Municipality of Ubongo for the warm reception and more so naming a road after me," he wrote on Instagram.

"I promise to come and visit again and I am grateful for the warm reception."

Wanyama has been recognised at neighbouring Kenya's most high-profile sportsman with Tanzania adopting him as the face of the sport due to his presence in east Africa.
