Elizabeth Hurley has opened up about her strained relationship with Steve Bing, the father of her son Damian, saying she is “grateful” they were back on talking terms before his death.

The model and actress dated Bing after she split from Hugh Grant in 2000, and the relationship resulted in son, Damian, now 18.

But the pregnancy proved an issue for the couple and Bing denied he was the father, though a DNA test later proved he was.

The spat led to the couple becoming estranged and Damian had little to do with Bing growing up.

However, Hurley has now confirmed they had healed the rift before Bing took his own life.

The star told You magazine: “We hadn’t been friends for a very long time, but about a year and a half ago he came back into our lives.”

Speaking of his death, she said: “It’s very sad… just terrible. Horrific that it happened but there is some comfort to know we had made up and there was no bad feeling.”

She added “It was great to connect again with someone who… we had loved each other, very much. A long time ago.

“I’m actually very grateful that we had the chance to reconnect. There were no hard feelings left. In fact, there were a lot of positive feelings left. But it was a terrible thing to happen.”

Hurley took to Instagram to pay tribute to Bing following his death in June.

She wrote: “I am saddened beyond belief that my ex Steve is no longer with us. It is a terrible end.

“Our time together was very happy and I’m posting these pictures because although we went through some tough times, it’s the good, wonderful memories of a sweet, kind man that matter.

“In the past year we had become close again. We last spoke on our son’s 18th birthday.

“This is devastating news and I thank everyone for their lovely messages.”
