Liverpool's Daniel Sturridge seeking more time to respond to FA betting charge

Daniel Sturridge has asked for more time to respond to his Football Association misconduct charge in relation to an alleged breach of betting rules.

The Liverpool striker was charged by the FA last week in relation to betting during January 2018, at the time of his loan move to West Bromwich Albion.

Sturridge was handed an initial deadline of 6.00pm on Tuesday evening to submit a formal response to the charge.

However, it is understood that Sturridge’s representatives have asked to be granted more time by the case’s independent judicial panel.

The independent panel’s chair will make a decision on whether to accept Sturridge’s request in the coming days.

Sturridge denied ever gambling on football upon the announcement of the charge last Monday.

However, the regulations in question also prohibit players from passing on privileged information to others.

“Daniel has given his full and unequivocal cooperation throughout this process and has assured the club he will continue to do so,” a Liverpool statement, released last Monday, read.

“Daniel has also stated categorically that he has never gambled on football. As with any issue of this nature, we will allow the process to be concluded in its entirety before making any further comment.”
