🏆 Real Madrid are Super Cup champions as Mbappé gets off the mark
Kylian Mbappé made his debut for Real Madrid as they took on Atalanta in the UEFA Super Cup.
Here’s what happened.
Real Madrid stars shine as they beat Atalanta to Super Cup trophy
Scorers: Valverde 59′, Mbappé 68′
A strong second half performance from Real Madrid saw them beat Atalanta 2-0 to earn a record-breaking sixth Super Cup trophy.
Carlo Ancelotti’s men began brightly, but Atalanta’s Ademola Lookman seemed to be a dangerous prospect too.
Making his competitive debut for the club, Kylian Mbappé had a shot blocked after just 15 minutes, after some good work from Federico Valverde.
Atalanta may have been the underdogs before the kickoff, but Lookman was almost in on a one on one situation but Antonio Rüdiger stepped up with a perfectly timed tackle.
Just before half-time, Rodrygo crashed a shot against the crossbar from inside the box, which was the best chance of the half by far.
Into the second half and Thibaut Courtois was called into action almost right away, pulling off a world-class save on a header from Atalanta’s Mario Pašalić.
The deadlock was broken when a sudden burst of speed in the box from Vinícius Jr. allowed him to find room for an inch-perfect cross that was easily converted by Valverde.
No sooner had he provided that assist, than Vinícius went close himself, before Jude Bellingham hit the post shortly afterwards.
As Madrid’s attack began to click into gear, Mbappé got his first goal for the club on his competitive debut, with Bellingham supplying the chance for the finish from 12 yards out.
Real Madrid begin their LaLiga campaign on Sunday, when they travel to Real Mallorca with one trophy already in the bag.
