Lionel Messi scores 700th career goal with Barcelona vs Atletico Madrid Panenka penalty

Barcelona forward Lionel Messi has reached a new milestone after scoring for the Catalans at home to Atletico Madrid tonight.

The Argentine attacker had netted in each of Barca's first two games after the restart – the wins over Mallorca and Leganes – to take his career total to 699 for club and country.

And after failing to convert in the matches against Sevilla, Athletic Club and Celta Vigo, the 33-year-old made it 700 as he scored at Camp Nou against third-placed Atletico with a second-half 'Panenka' penalty chipped straight down the middle to deceive Jan Oblak.

Coach Quique Setien recently described his captain's numbers as 'astronomical' and the 61-year-old will hope his star man can can add a few more as the Blaugrana look to beat Real Madrid to the title in the remaining rounds of LaLiga.

Messi now has 630 goals for the Catalan club in 724 official games and 70 for Argentina in 138 caps for his national team.

The six-time Ballon d'Or winner is also top scorer in LaLiga with 22 goals this term and he has hit 20 or more in the competition for 12 seasons in a row.
