Lindsey Vonn crashes while training in Colorado, will miss start of final season

The start to Lindsey Vonn’s final season has to be put on hold.

Vonn crashed while training for the Super-G at Copper Mountain in Colorado on Monday and injured her knee, she announced on Twitter on Tuesday. While she said that she will not need surgery, Vonn will miss the Lake Louise Audi FIS Ski World Cup event next week in Alberta, Canada — arguably the three best chances at wins Vonn will see on the World Cup circuit this season.

The four-time Olympic alpine skier announced earlier this year that the 2018-19 season will be her last one before retiring. Vonn currently has 82 wins on the World Cup circuit, just four wins short of Ingemar Stenmark’s record.

“If I get [the record], that would be a dream come true,” Vonn said last month. “If I don’t, I think I’ve had an incredibly successful career no matter what. I’m still the all-time winningest female skier.”

The 34-year-old had five wins in 14 World Cup starts in speed events last season. There are 14 races scheduled after Lake Louise this season.

While Vonn considered continuing into the 2019-20 season, she decided earlier this year that it wouldn’t make sense due to her history of injuries, regardless of whether she breaks Stenmarks’ record or not.

“Physically, I’ve gotten to the point where it doesn’t make sense,” Vonn said last month. “I really would like to be active when I’m older, so I have to look to the future and not just be so focused on what’s in front of me.”
