Lightning's Brayden Point scores hat trick in just over 90 seconds

Late in the first period between the Tampa Bay Lightning and Pittsburgh Penguins on Thursday night, the Lightning’s Brayden Point scored on the power play.

41 seconds after the intermission, he did it again. Then, only 47 seconds after that, he was able to find the back of the net once more.

When all was said and done, the 22-year-old had himself a natural hat trick in only 91 seconds and a little bit of history.

On top of that, it was the second-quickest three goals by a single player since the expansion era.

Now, to put what happened into context.

Special teams were vital for both the Penguins and Lightning during the first half of this contest. The first five goals of the game (including Point’s three) and six of the first seven were scored on the power play.

Late in the first period, Pittsburgh did a great job of shooting themselves in the foot. Up 2-0 at the time following a couple of tallies on the man advantage, the Penguins’ Evgeni Malkin (for tripping) and Phil Kessel (for slashing) took simultaneous minor penalties with 23 seconds remaining in the frame. Ten seconds after that, their teammate Matt Cullen was called for tripping to set up a very long five-on-three advantage for Tampa Bay.

When you’re playing against a power play that entered the game successful 23.8% of the time, that’s a recipe for disaster.

Only ten seconds after Cullen’s trip to the box and with three ticks remaining in the period, Point scored his first of the night.

Still on a 5-on-3 in the second, Point put the puck between the pipes once again after a gorgeous pass from Steven Stamkos.

As one of the best shooters on the planet, Pittsburgh’s defenders were forced to respect Stamkos up high and he was able to find Point at the side of the net with a tasty dish.

Shortly after that, with Tampa Bay now on a five-on-four advantage, Point’s ability to finish and the impressive puck movement of the Lightning’s first power play unit were put on full display.

That is just some nasty passing by Tampa Bay on that sequence. Nikita Kucherov and J.T. Miller combine to get the puck to Point in a hurry and his release is just too quick for Penguins’ netminder Matt Murray.

Point’s three goals pushed his total to 12 this season, gave the Lightning a 3-2 advantage at the time and put him in some pretty elite company.

Although Point’s feat was pretty incredible, it’s still nowhere close to what Bill Mosienko did with the Chicago Blackhawks over 66 years ago.

The list of fastest hat-tricks in the league’s history, as a result, begs the question: How the hell is one person able to score three goals in 21 seconds against an NHL goaltender.

Ridiculous.
