LeBron James says More Than a Vote will get involved in the Georgia Senate elections

The 2020 presidential election is over, but LeBron James’ More Than a Vote campaign isn’t going anywhere. James confirmed the organization would stick around following the election, and said More Than A Vote will get involved in the upcoming Georgia Senate elections.

James made those comments on “Uninterrupted.”

James’ full comments read:

“We are never about a one-off,” James said. “We’re trying to figure out ways right now where we can continue to implement change in the communities. Not only in my home community of Akron, Ohio, but communities all over America and hopefully create change in the world as well. We’re looking for opportunities.

“There’s a huge Senate race that’s going on in Georgia coming up in January. So, we’re tackling that. Stacey Abrams, who is down there, is a monster. Shout out Stacey, you are unbelievable. And everyone in the city of Atlanta, you guys have done so much great stuff, and also in Georgia as a state. We’re going to get behind that and hopefully continue to create change.”

James partnered with a number of athletes to form More Than A Vote in June. The organization aims to combat “systemic, racist voter suppression by educating, energizing, and protecting our community.” Patrick Mahomes, Skylar Diggins-Smith and Alvin Kamara are among the athletes involved in the project.

Two Georgia Senate seats will go to runoff election

Two Georgia Senate seats are currently in a runoff after no candidate received 50 percent of the vote in the November election. Those seats are currently held by Kelly Loeffler and David Perdue, who are both Republicans. They will be challenged by Raphael Warnock and Jon Ossoff, two Democrats, in the January runoff.

The runoffs could have massive political implications. If Warnock and Ossoff win the seats, the Democrats and Republicans would split the Senate 50-50. In that scenario, Vice President-elect Kamala Harris would represent the tie-breaking vote, giving the Democrats an advantage in the Senate.

James and More Than A Vote will not be the first athletes to get involved in either race. In August, WNBA players wore shirts urging fans to vote for Warnock. Loeffler — who is a co-owner of the Atlanta Dream — watched as players on her team campaigned for her opponent. Loeffler wasn’t happy about that, releasing a statement complaining about “cancel culture.”

The Georgia Senate runoff elections will take place Jan. 5, so James and More Than a Vote have a little over a month to get involved in those races.
