The Laurentian Voyageurs have suspended a member of their team following an alleged sexual assault.

According to a story in the Sudbury Star, the player – identified as Blake Luscombe – was charged on Nov. 15 with one count of sexual assault stemming from an incident on Oct. 11.

He is to appear in court on Dec. 14.

The team’s head coach Craig Duncanson told the Star that Luscombe had been taken off the team weeks ago for breaking the squad’s code of conduct.

While Duncanson wouldn’t address the violation directly, in general he said players are expected to be “on the right side of a character issue.”

The coach stressed, however, that the player is innocent until proven guilty. “If he’s indeed done nothing wrong, he’s paid a heck of a price,” he said.

Duncanson said he remains proud of his team and hopes the negative attention doesn’t reflect on the group as a whole.

“We have an outstanding group of young men,” he said. “We have a number of all-Canadians who are leaders in their communities, and I hope this doesn’t tarnish that.”

It’s not the first time Laurentian athletics has been in the news this year. In October, five members of the university’s basketball team were suspended for allegedly hazing a teammate at an off-campus party, according to the school’s newspaper The Lambda.

The players later issued an apology for the incident, writing:

“We accept the discipline that has been imposed on us by virtue of our actions as being fair and reasonable,” they wrote.

“We will not all be rejoining our teammates until after the new year, but look forward to cheering them on in the intervening period.

“Our commitment to our campus, our fellow students, our teammates, and our community is that we will continue to learn from this, and that we will be leaders in fostering a positive, respectful culture on campus and in the community.”
