Kyle Walker-Peters convinced he can be Tottenham's 'second in line' behind Kieran Trippier

Kyle Walker-Peters is eager to stake a claim as Tottenham’s backup right-back following the departure of Kyle Walker.

Manchester City completed a £50million deal for Walker earlier this month, with Kieran Trippier expected to be promoted to a starting role in Mauricio Pochettino’s side.

Whilst Tottenham are keen on Porto full-back Ricardo Pereira they could have a ready-made replacement in the form of Walker-Peters, who earned rave reviews for his part in England’s Under-20 World Cup triumph.

Walker-Peters started in Spurs’ 4-2 win over Paris St Germain on Saturday, completing the first half before making way for Trippier, and hopes Spurs’ International Champions Cup fixtures offer him a chance to prove his worth to Pochettino.

“It’s a big opportunity now Kyle Walker’s gone,” he told reporters in Orlando.

“I’m trying to show I can be second in line, and like I said, these are the games to do that, and [so are] the training sessions out here and back at the training ground.”

Asked about Walker-Peters’ performance after the win at the Camping World Stadium Pochettino offered words of encouragement for the 20-year-old.

“I think we have a few games to give a chance to not only him, but a few young players,” Pochettino said. “It's up to them to step up and take the opportunity. I'm happy today.

“Always it's difficult to play a game like we played today. Always it's difficult for the younger ones. Everybody knows that they are judged and that pressure is difficult but I think they managed it very well.

“Ok maybe some mistakes, but it's about learning, for the young ones to learn. They are working very hard and only need time to try to show they can compete.”
