Kyle Walker believes new team Manchester City must overhaul Tottenham to be considered among the best in the world.

The full-back swapped north London for Manchester last week in a deal worth around £50million and made his debut for City in Thursday's 2-0 loss to rivals Manchester United.

Speaking after the game and ahead of facing Real Madrid, Walker was full of praise for his former club and not only backed Spurs to be a team to beat in the Premier League title race but also a rival to better on the world stage.

"It's a couple of hard games to start off with," he told City TV of the two friendly games.

"But, if we are going to be up there as one of the best teams in the world, we are going to need to challenge the likes of Manchester United, Real Madrid and Tottenham - who have had a couple of fantastic seasons under Pochettino."

He added: "It's disappointing to lose against your rivals but seeing as though it's our first game, I thought there was a lot of positives and we just need to build on that for the start of the season."

Tottenham finished second last season, a record high for the club in the Premier League era, sitting eight points ahead of City and Walker expects more of the same in the next title race.

"I think there are a few teams in it," he said. "Tottenham are going to be strong, Chelsea are going to be strong, Arsenal [and] Liverpool.

"It's going to be a tough season but I think we've got the players in the dressing room to be right up there in it."
