Kyle Larson's playoffs points hole gets bigger after Talladega penalty

Kyle Larson’s even further outside the top eight than he was immediately after Sunday’s race at Talladega.

NASCAR announced Wednesday that Larson and his team would be penalized 10 points for improper damage fixes after his spin during the race. Larson spun on the backstretch and an exploded tire caused damage to the hood of his car. According to NASCAR, Larson’s team reattached parts on the car with metal tabs. Per NASCAR rules, only fasteners and tape can be used.

Larson finished 11th and scored 26 points on Sunday. That left him 11th in the points standings, 71 points out of third and 26 points behind Martin Truex Jr. in eighth. He’s now 81 points out of third and 36 points behind Truex.

Larson’s car chief David Bryant is also suspended for this weekend’s race at Kansas and crew chief Chad Johnson has been fined $25,000. Larson’s team had inspection issues before the Talladega race and the driver said following Sunday’s race that he had a terrible car all weekend.
