Ten years ago, Carl Edwards made a crazy last-lap pass attempt on Jimmie Johnson at Kansas Speedway.

The pass didn’t work. Edwards dove low underneath Johnson and ended up carrying so much speed in his attempted move that he slammed the wall and Johnson cruised by for the win. But it’s one of the more memorable moments in the track’s history as Edwards was chasing Johnson for the title that season.

Why are we talking about a moment from 10 years ago? Well, NBC’s NASCAR account tweeted the highlight Thursday night and it caught Denny Hamlin’s attention.

Kyle Busch chimed in Friday morning.

Drivers had to slow down significantly in the corners at Kansas Speedway in 2008. They will throughout the race on Sunday. That’s going to change in 2019 when NASCAR introduces rules that make the cars slower on the straightaways and faster in the corners.

A combination of lower top speeds and faster corner speeds equals far less time drivers will spend off the throttle in 2018. And Busch and Hamlin want you to know that the feasibility of a banzai move like Edwards’ is almost nonexistent with the upcoming rules.
