What we know about shooting that injured C. Wesley Morgan, left his daughter dead

Kentucky State Police on Wednesday were still investigating a home invasion at a former Kentucky lawmaker’s house which left one woman dead and a man injured.

C. Wesley Morgan told the Herald-Leader intruders killed his 32-year-old daughter, Jordan Morgan. C. Wesley Morgan was also shot and taken to the hospital with minor injuries, police said.

No one was arrested Tuesday, according to police. As part of the investigation, police asked anyone with pertinent information to come forward. Anyone who may have seen something suspicious in the area between 3:30 and 4:30 a.m. was also asked to speak with investigators by calling 859-623-2404.

How deadly shooting unfolded on Willis Branch Road

State police said dispatch received a call regarding a shooting at 1266 Willis Branch Road just after 4:30 a.m. Tuesday. One person, later determined to be Jordan Morgan, was pronounced dead on scene by the Madison County coroner, officials said.

Several family members were at the home asleep when the shooting happened, according to state police. An individual entered the residence and fired shots.

The homeowner fired shots in return and was injured in the shooting, according to state police. He was taken to University of Kentucky Chandler Hospital and released later Tuesday, state police said. Madison County Coroner Jimmy Cornelison later confirmed C. Wesley Morgan was the person hospitalized, but added that Morgan was back home Tuesday evening.

The suspect left the residence after the shooting and no arrests had been made as of Tuesday afternoon, police said.

Who is Jordan Morgan?

Jordan Morgan was the 32-year-old daughter of former state Rep. C. Wesley Morgan. She recently started a new job in the Reminger law office in Lexington, where her colleagues were “shocked and saddened” to learn of her death.

“I only knew her a limited time. She had just started with us,” attorney Kenneth Finley said. “But she seemed to be a very bright, attentive person. She had her whole career ahead of her, obviously, which makes this very sad.”

Jordan Morgan worked on Republican Matt Bevin’s successful 2015 campaign for Kentucky governor and stayed with him for about 18 months as a member of his communications team at the state Capitol in Frankfort.

In 2017, she left politics to prosecute felonies as an assistant commonwealth’s attorney in Boone County. She joined the Reminger law office only about a week ago, Finley said.

Jordan Morgan also wrote a couple opinion pieces for the Herald-Leader in 2017 from her perspective as a politically conservative woman in the legal field, sometimes ideologically outnumbered by her liberal friends and colleagues. She urged like-minded women to speak their minds.

Who is C. Wesley Morgan?

C. Wesley Morgan is a former Republican lawmaker who represented the 81st District, which covers part of Madison County, in the Kentucky House of Representatives in 2017 and 2018.

When he lost his house seat in the GOP Primary in 2018, Morgan initially said he would no longer be a part of the Republican Party, but he backtracked the next day and said he had changed his mind.

Morgan attempted to unseat Mitch McConnell in 2020 but was unsuccessful.

Morgan owns Liquor World, which has stores in Richmond, Manchester, Barbourville and Irvine, according to the business’ Facebook page.

Morgan is originally from Hyden and has been married to his wife Lindsey since 2007, according to his Facebook page.

The scene of Tuesday’s shooting previously gained attention because it has a fully stocked and furnished bunker behind a steel and concrete door.
