Kim Ng, Sarah Fuller take part in President Joe Biden's inauguration special

The inauguration of President Joe Biden on Wednesday featured plenty connections from the sports world, including some major barrier-breakers.

Miami Marlins general manager Kim Ng, the first woman and first person of East-Asian descent to serve as an MLB GM, and NBA Hall-of-Famer Kareem Abdul-Jabbar were among the people who appeared in a segment of past presidential inaugural address during the inauguration special “Celebrating America.”

Ng read the first inaugural address of Ronald Reagan, while Abdul-Jabbar recited Abraham Lincoln’s:

Among the other people in the segment were labor activist Dolores Huerta and Bradley Harrington, the youth who bonded with Biden over their struggles with stuttering.

Plenty of sports figures at Biden’s inauguration

In addition to Ng and Abdul-Jabbar, Vanderbilt kicker Sarah Fuller, the first woman to score a point in a Power 5 college football game, introduced vice president Kamala Harris during the special.

“I’m Sarah Fuller. I’ve faced a lot of challenges as a goalkeeper on the Vanderbilt University women’s soccer team and as a kicker on the football team,” Fuller said in a recorded address. “But seeing other women break barriers inspired me and being the first at what they do inspired me and gave me the strength to succeed. And that is why it is such an honor to introduce a true groundbreaker, and after 232 years of waiting, being able to say these words: Our nation’s first woman vice president.”

Olympic athletes Nathan Chen, Allyson Felix and Katie Ledecky, WNBA All-Star Elena Delle-Donne and members of wheelchair basketball program the Ryan Martin Foundation also appeared in a recorded video.

And, of course, there was the Alex Rodriguez cameo during Biden’s inauguration ceremony, thanks to his fiancee Jennifer Lopez’s performance.
