KHL player banned 8 games for Max Talbot hit, brutal head slash (Video)

Max Talbot, beloved former NHL player, is now competing in the KHL’s playoffs with Lokomotiv.

His goal in Game 6 of their Western Conference semifinal series against CSKA ended up being the game-winner and, in turn, series clincher.

But moments after he scored the goal in the second period, Talbot was dropped to the ice with an illegal check to the head by CSKA defenseman Grigory Panin. It was vicious, brutal, uncalled for and caused an instant melee at center ice.

It was during that melee that Panin dished out a second head-shot to a Lokomotiv player: Brandon Kozun, who had a cup of coffee with the Toronto Maple Leafs and was in the Los Angeles Kings system.

This one was really nasty: As the two players came together in dueling cross-checks, Panin went high with his and connected with Kozun’s head:

That’s some Chris Simon-quality stuff right there.

Panin was given two major penalties and two game misconducts (50 minutes in penalties). On Tuesday, the KHL handed down supplemental discipline that will carry over to his next KHL season:

After reviewing the incidents, the KHL Disciplinary Committee has imposed a two-game suspension on Panin for the foul on Talbot and a four-game suspension for the attack on Kozun.

As this was not the first time this season the player had earned a game misconduct penalty, he incurs an automatic one-game suspension for repeat offending. Furthermore, the regulations stipulate that he receives a second automatic one-game suspension for earning two 20-minute penalties in one match. He must also pay four separate fines for the above offenses. In total, Grigory Panin is therefore banned for eight games.
