Thirty years after the original Karate Kid, Ralph Macchio and William Zabka are back in the fight.
As reported by The Hollywood Reporter, the actors, who played rivals Daniel LaRusso and Johnny Lawrence, have signed on for a 10-episode comedy series titled Cobra Kai that will premiere on YouTube Red in 2018.
The original Karate Kid premiered in 1984; it featured a young Daniel LaRusso moving from Newark to Los Angeles and overcoming bullies, including Johnny, with the help of his karate trainer, Mr. Miyagi, played by Pat Morita, who died in 2005. The film ended with Daniel defeating Johnny and the Cobra Kai dojo at a karate tournament.
In 1986’s The Karate Kid Part II, Daniel and Mr. Miyagi traveled to Okinawa, Japan, where Daniel once again defeated a foe, this time the evil Chozen Toguchi, in a final fight scene.
The Karate Kid Part III, released in 1989, wrapped up Daniel’s storyline when he was forced by the owner of the Cobra Kai dojo and his financial backer to defend his title at that year’s karate tournament. Daniel won once again, and the Cobra Kai was ruined.
The YouTube Red series will be set 30 years after the first film and will feature Johnny reopening the Cobra Kai dojo on his quest for redemption. This won’t sit well with Daniel, who has been trying to find balance in his life without Mr. Miyagi.
“Cobra Kai will be a true continuation of the original films — packed with comedy, heart, and thrilling fight scenes. We can’t wait to reignite the LaRusso-Lawrence rivalry,” writers Josh Heald, Jon Hurwitz, and Hayden Schlossberg said in a joint statement.
