Kansas QB Ryan Willis transfers to Virginia Tech

Virginia Tech has added a former starter at an FBS school to its quarterback depth chart for 2018.

Kansas quarterback Ryan Willis said Thursday night he was transferring to Virginia Tech. He’ll have to sit out the 2017 season but will be eligible to play two seasons after that.

Willis was Kansas’ primary starter in 2015. He was 164-315 pasing for 1,719 yards, eight touchdowns and 10 interceptions. In 2016, Willis played in six games, splitting time with Montell Cozart and Carter Stanley at quarterback. Willis was 72-117 passing for 811 yards, three touchdowns and seven interceptions.

Stanley was the team’s starting quarterback in the Jayhawks’ upset win over Texas.

Virginia Tech also added transfer A.J. Bush this week. Bush, a two-star dual-threat quarterback according to Rivals, was at Iowa Western Community College in 2016.

While it won’t be Willis, the Hokies will have a new starting quarterback in 2017 after Jerod Evans somewhat surprisingly declared for the NFL draft after the 2016 season. The favorite for the job could be Joshua Jackson, who redshirted in 2016. Jackson was a three-star recruit in the class of 2016.
