Doug Meacham is moving from one Big 12 school to another.

TCU’s co-offensive coordinator for the past three seasons will now be the sole offensive coordinator at Kansas. The Jayhawks made the move official Thursday morning.

“I am thrilled to be adding someone of the caliber of Doug Meacham to our staff,” Kansas coach David Beaty said in a statement. “Doug is someone I have admired for quite some time for his creativity on the offensive side of the ball. I have had to go up against him several times and it was always a huge challenge because of his ability to direct an offense. I am incredibly thankful to have him on our staff moving forward.”

A former wide receivers coach at Texas A&M, Beaty took over play-calling duties before the season for the Jayhawks.

Meacham’s trip north means TCU’s offensive coordinator responsibilities are now fully shouldered by Sonny Cumbie. He and Meacham had split coordinator duties.

TCU coach Gary Patterson hired Meacham and Cumbie before the 2014 season in a bid to overhaul the offense. The move to an uptempo attack worked. Trevone Boykin became one of the most explosive quarterbacks in the country and TCU was in position to go to the College Football Playoff in 2014 before being dropped in the final rankings.

Without Boykin in 2016, TCU’s offense wasn’t as proficient. The offense averaged nearly 100 fewer yards a game from 2015 and over a half yard less per play. Quarterback Kenny Hill — yes, the transfer from Texas A&M — threw for 17 touchdowns and had 13 interceptions. Boykin threw for 31 touchdowns and had 10 picks last year.

TCU’s 30-6 loss to Kansas State in the 2016 regular season finale was the first time the Horned Frogs didn’t score a touchdown in 10 years. After the game, Patterson had the following to say about his offense.

“Really across the board we got thrown around by everybody. We got to grow up on offense. Until they do that, we won’t win many games against good people.”

Meacham’s departure comes a year after he interviewed to be the head coach at North Texas and Texas State. He was also mentioned as a candidate to take the open OC position at Texas A&M filled by Noel Mazzone, but that was refuted.

TCU finished the season 6-7 after losing to Georgia in the Liberty Bowl.
