Kansas City Royals’ Vinnie Pasquantino lands on injured list. How long will he be out?

The Kansas City Royals will be without first baseman Vinnie Pasquantino for the upcoming days, as he was placed on the 10-day injured list for what the club is calling “right shoulder instability.”

Pasquantino left the Royals loss to the Orioles on Friday with an apparent shoulder injury. He said there wasn’t a specific play when the injury occurred. He just felt some discomfort and was replaced by Matt Duffy in the lineup.

The Royals announced Pasquantino will get a MRI on Monday.

“On Monday, we are going to get more tests and go from there,” Pasquantino said.

Royals manager Matt Quatraro said the club would monitor Pasquantino’s shoulder overnight, which resulted in the first baseman being placed on the injured list.

“We are not going to know the severity until we get back home,” Quatraro said. “It’s the same shoulder he had an issue with last year.”

Pasquantino has dealt with shoulder discomfort in his career. Last season, he was placed on the 10-day injured list with a similar injury. He missed 17 days as he recovered from the discomfort.

Pasquantino said the discomfort is in the same shoulder. He described the pain as very similar to last season.

“This is something that I have dealt with before,” Pasquantino said. “I (had physical therapy) all offseason, so this is something that sucks to happen.”

Pasquantino received treatment following Friday’s game. Despite the injury, his presence was felt during batting practice on Saturday. He hung around the batting cage and helped teammates as needed.

This season, Pasquantino is hitting .247 with a .324 on-base percentage. He has nine home runs and 26 RBIs across 61 appearances.

In a corresponding move, KC recalled outfielder Edward Olivares from the restricted list. Olivares spent one day on the restricted list for an unspecified “personal” reason, per Quatraro.

Olivares could see an increased opportunity in left field. He will be part of a rotation that includes Nate Eaton, Jackie Bradley Jr. and potentially Kyle Isbel when he returns from injury.

The Royals will also shift Nick Pratto to first base. Pratto had started in left field but is a natural first baseman.

“We can move guys around,” Quatraro said. “When Jackie is in center, Waters can go to left, those kinds of things. We have that flexibility to mix and match.”

The lineup will look different as well. Pasquantino routinely batted in the top of the order. The Royals slid MJ Melendez into the third spot on Saturday. Salvador Perez moved to the second spot behind Pratto to create a balanced lineup.

The Royals are in the midst of a three-game series against the Baltimore Orioles. They will return home to face the Cincinnati Reds beginning on Monday, June 12.
