Kansas City Royals game vs. Orioles had 2 unusual club milestones. Remember Mark Teahen?

The Kansas City Royals offensive woes continued on Saturday afternoon. After a quick start, the Royals lineup stalled against Baltimore Orioles in a 6-1 loss at Camden Yards.

The Royals have been outscored 30-11 during the road trip. In their last five games, KC has scored two or fewer runs four times.

It’s resulted in a five-game losing streak.

Cole Irvin stifled the Royals offense on Saturday. He allowed one run across 5 1/3 innings of work. The Orioles also turned in some stellar defensive plays.

“We didn’t capitalize and drive runners in when we had them on base,” Royals manager Matt Quatraro said.

The Royals made hard contact but couldn’t catch a break. In the first inning, Orioles outfielder Anthony Santander robbed Maikel Garcia of extra bases. He leaped against the wall and hauled in a highlight-reel catch. The Baltimore faithful gave him a standing ovation.

Later, Aaron Hicks made a sliding grab in center field. The Orioles also got terrific plays from middle infielders Adam Frazier and Jorge Mateo.

The Royals generated one run on the afternoon. Freddy Fermin drove in Edward Olivares after he started the fifth inning with a double. Olivares was a bright spot. He went 3 for 3 with two doubles in his return from the restricted list.

“It’s been a handful of days where we’ve struggled to score,” Quatraro said. “Nobody is going to be happy with that. These guys are very diligent workers. They give their best. When it’s not coming through and they aren’t getting the results, it’s frustrating.”

The lack of run support was an issue.

Royals starter Brady Singer struggled with his command. Singer surrendered four runs and walked three batters in 4 1/3 innings of work. He threw 97 pitches, but registered 58 strikes.

“I couldn’t get the fastball going. It’s something I was struggling with the whole game,” Singer said. “I tried to get the sinker to work and really all I had was the slider and a few good changeups. Just tried to do the best I could with the pitches there.”

Royal milestone: KC becomes 24th team to reach 50,000 strikeouts

The Kansas City Royals have a rich history dating back some five decades. The franchise has seen memorable moments, such as the 1985 and 2015 World Series. On Saturday, the Royals added another milestone to the trophy case.

In the first inning, Brady Singer struck out Orioles outfielder Austin Hays. The strikeout not only eclipsed the milestone of 50,000 in franchise history — it also was the 400th strikeout in Singer’s career.

Zack Greinke is the team’s active leader in strikeouts. He has 1,054 strikeouts in his Royals career.

KC recorded nine strikeouts on Saturday.

Edward Olivares has longest Royals plate appearance since 2009

Edward Olivares spent a long time at the plate in the seventh inning. Actually, it was more like 14 pitches, as he dueled with Orioles reliever Austin Voth.

The battle was reminiscent of Captain America facing Marvel villain Thanos. (I can do this all day.)

Ironically, Captain America and Black Panther (at least the mascot versions) were in attendance at Camden Yards. It was part of a special Marvel Superhero Day. Fans received a Marvel-inspired Adley Rutschman bobblehead decked out in Captain America gear.

As for the long plate appearance, Olivares got to a 2-2 count in four pitches. Then the appearance came to a stalemate.

“The at-bat was great and I was just trying to get on base,” Olivares said. “I said in my mind that you have to compete and let’s go.”

The next seven pitches were foul balls. Voth threw his sweeper three times and it didn’t work. He later tried fastball and curveball. He finally saw two more balls and headed down to first base.

Olivares joined Mark Teahen and Joe Randa as the latest Royals to have a 14-pitch plate appearance. Teahen reached the mark in 2009. Randa accomplished it in 2003 and also got aboard with a walk.

What’s next: The Royals conclude their three-game set against the Orioles. Carlos Hernandez will be the opener in the series finale.
