Jurgen Klopp says Liverpool's impressive European history 'a problem' for current side

Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp has described Liverpool's impressive European history as a "problem", but says his side are ready to write the next successful chapter.

The 50-year-old was speaking at his press conference after arriving in Russia on Monday night ahead of Liverpool's Champions League group stage tie against Spartak Moscow on Tuesday.

The Anfield club have been crowned European champions five times previously, but have struggled in the competition in recent years, winning just three of their last 13 matches in the Champions League.

Asked about Liverpool's successful past in Europe's premier club competition, Klopp said: “Records like that are a problem when people can remember them. It is a number - nothing else.

“In the past, a lot of teams won the Champions League and then had no chance for the next five, six, ten years. Things change.”

Liverpool drew their first group game against Sevilla and although the Klopp will be feeling the pressure to get a result in Moscow, he is still managing to enjoy the experience.

He added: “It is exciting. It is a bit like international football, and adventure – you land, it's dark, never been to Moscow before, you see all the policemen and all that stuff.

“It’s not possible to train tonight because of the distance. It's really exciting and it keeps you really awake. That’s good."
