Jurgen Klopp says the performances of Jarell Quansah this season have justified Liverpool’s decision not to sign a central defender during the summer transfer window.

The 20-year-old started his sixth game of the season as the Reds sealed their status as Group E winners in the Europa League by beating LASK 4-0 at Anfield on Thursday night.

He was praised for his performance away at Bournemouth last month too and Klopp has confirmed the club had rejected loan offers for the player.

Quansah only made his debut for his boyhood club back in August but is quickly emerging as a viable first-team option for a team battling across a number of different fronts.

After such a difficult campaign last time out, Liverpool are back in the Premier League title picture and trail leaders Arsenal by only two points.

Klopp’s side are also in the Carabao Cup quarter-finals ahead of a home tie against West Ham and can now rotate players for their final European group game, safe in the knowledge they are bound for the round of 16 in March.

As such, Quansah is in line for more opportunities and Klopp believes the youngster has helped prove the fact the club did not need to strengthen at centre-back during the summer.

"Jarell played a super game, that's true,” he said.

“That couldn't be better news for the club, to be honest. I think before this season a lot of people told us we should buy a centre-half.

“We knew we had Jarell. Did we know that he will show up like this? No, not exactly, but we were pretty hopeful, so the future is bright. It's cool.”
