Josh Sargent scores another great goal in U.S.'s U-20 World Cup win over Senegal

The United States’ 1-0 victory over Senegal at the Under-20 World Cup on Thursday in South Korea fell into the category of total team effort. The center-back partnership of Eric Palmer-Brown and Cameron Carter-Vickers, along with the midfield cover of Derrick Jones, locked things down defensively, and the tireless work of midfielders Tyler Adams and Brooks Lennon kept an American attack churning to keep the Senegalese on their back foot.

And yet, a 17-year-old with a penchant for scoring goals – wonderful goals – grabbed the spotlight again.

Josh Sargent, the star of the U.S.’s under-17 team, has quickly become the standout talent of Tab Ramos’s under-20 side because of his effortless ability to put the ball into the back of the net. The St. Louis native scored his third goal in two tournament games in Incheon by producing the match-winner against Senegal in the 34th minute.

Adams’ deft touch allowed Luca De La Torre to run into the box and find Sargent, who controlled the ball with a tap of his right foot and then spun to blast a left-footed rocket past goalkeeper Mouhamed Mbaye.

That silky smooth skill of Sargent is what’s getting American soccer fans excited. It’s also earned him a deal to join Bundesliga side Werder Bremen when he turns 18 on Feb. 20, according to reports.

The U.S., which needed two Sargent goals and a late De La Torre equalizer to salvage a 3-3 draw in its opener against Ecuador, sits atop Group F with four points, one point ahead of Senegal and Saudi Arabia. The Americans play the Saudis in their final group game on Sunday (5 a.m. ET on Fox Sports 1).
