It was a bad afternoon for Tottenham Hotspur, and not just because of the 1-0 loss at Southampton.

Spurs’ recent struggles continued as manager Jose Mourinho was shown a yellow card and star striker Harry Kane had to come off injured at St. Mary’s Stadium.

With about 15 minutes remaining, Mourinho was apparently upset with a disallowed equalizer from Kane and got in the face of the Southampton bench:

In Mourinho’s postgame interview, he said he deserved the yellow card and then delivered his latest zinger through the media:

Was the idiot a Southampton coach? The fourth official? Who knows.

Mourinho’s behavior exemplified Spurs’ frustration on an afternoon where they were convincingly outplayed by Southampton. To make matters worse, Kane appeared to tweak his hamstring while stretching for the would-be equalizer and couldn’t continue.

Danny Ings scored the game’s only goal with an expert touch to beat Toby Alderweireld and a slick finish with his left foot:

The holiday fixture congestion hasn’t been kind to Spurs, who have now failed to win three of their last four Premier League matches. Mourinho has spoken out about the recklessness of such scheduling, and he’s been joined by other big-name managers, so he’s right about that.

He got Wednesday’s match wrong. Too much of that going on with Tottenham lately.
