Jose Fernandez's stolen high school jersey is anonymously returned
On Thursday, we brought you the upsetting news that Jose Fernandez’s high school jersey had been stolen from Alonso High School, the school he attended and was drafted from in 2011. Even crueler: the theft occurred during a candlelight vigil that was held in remembrance of Fernandez, the 24-year-old Miami Marlins ace pitcher who died in a tragic boating accident early Sunday morning.
Thankfully, this story has a happy ending. The AP has reported that the jersey was anonymously returned on Thursday, via an envelope left at ticket booth at Alonso High School.

The school had been displaying that jersey in the dugout, but they did have one more, which they hung on Thursday.

Now they have both of them back. Hopefully the theft doesn’t prevent them from displaying the jersey in the dugout again. Just like the Fernandez jerseys that were in dugouts all around baseball the day after his death, it seems like the perfect place for it.
We have no idea if the thief returned it because he or she felt remorse, or if the jersey was found and returned by someone else after it was taken. What matters is that it was returned, and the jersey is thankfully back where it belongs.
