Jorge Masvidal beats Ben Askren with fastest knockout in UFC history

Jorge Masvidal scored the fastest knockout in UFC history Saturday night in Las Vegas with a dramatic flying knee and two ground follow-up punches, all to the head of the previously unbeaten Ben Askren. The official stoppage time came in at just five seconds into the first round.

In fact, Askren was out cold sooner than that as Masvidal’s knee put him out on contact perhaps less than two full seconds into the fight. Masvidal began the fight in an all-out sprint at Askren.

The Olympic freestyle wrestler then hinged at his hips, face-down and reached out as he has done throughout his career in search of his opponent’s body. This time, Askren found only Masvidal’s angry knee.

Masvidal’s many mocking taunts of Askren following the history-making knockout took much longer than the fight itself.

Leading up to the grudge match, the two had taunted one another over social media and in person, with Askren even going so far as to suggest that Masvidal didn’t understand Askren when he addressed him in English. In return, Masvidal promised to end Askren’s career.

“That dude was talking wild, man,” Masvidal said postfight.

“I had to show him that there’s consequences, sometimes. There’s some bad motherf------ out there. You don’t want to wake them up.”

Masvidal also thanked his family and coaches and teammates, before continuing his call for a welterweight world championship bout. “I’m coming for that belt,” he said.

Masvidal’s win is his second straight. In March, he knocked out former title-challenger Darren Till.

The loss is the first of Askren’s decade-long professional career, dipping his overall mark to 19-1. Masvidal’s latest stoppage improves his mark to 34-13.
