Jordyn Tyson injury update: Star Arizona State WR out for rest of 2024 season

Arizona State has engineered one of the most remarkable turnarounds in college football during the 2024 season.

After a 3-9 finish in their first season under coach Kenny Dillingham in 2023, the Sun Devils are 10-2 and ranked No. 13 in the US LBM Coaches Poll heading into their Big 12 championship game matchup Saturday against No. 16 Iowa State. With a win against the Cyclones, they would earn a spot in the College Football Playoff.

Arizona State enters that game, however, with at least one major question mark.

Jordyn Tyson has been one of the most important players on the Sun Devils’ offense this season, as the team’s leading wide receiver and a favorite target of quarterback Sam Leavitt.

But after suffering an injury in the second half of his team’s 49-7 rout last Saturday of archrival Arizona, Tyson’s status loomed as an uncertainty, both for the Big 12 title game and a potential playoff appearance.

The worst fears that emerged when Tyson was seen on the sideline last Saturday wearing a sling have come to fruition for Arizona State.

Tyson underwent surgery Tuesday for an unspecified injury and will miss the remainder of the season, Dillingham said Wednesday.

Tyson had already been ruled out of the Big 12 championship game, but Dillingham’s announcement ruled out the possibility of a potential return for the playoff.

“Time to move some people around. Time to get some more people on the field, create a little more balance offensively,” Dillingham said Monday about the impact of Tyson’s absence. “What makes it more difficult is that obviously he demands two people to cover him. So if people don’t have to demand two people, they can load the box. You got to find more creative ways to win those one-on-one matchups.”

Tyson was injured in the third quarter of the Sun Devils’ win against Arizona, when he fell hard to the turf after making what would be his eighth and final catch of the day. He immediately left the game and went to the team’s locker room. He returned to the Arizona State sideline wearing a sling on his left arm.

A Colorado transfer who redshirted last season, the 6-foot-1 Tyson has been a revelation for the Sun Devils.

In 12 regular-season games, he racked up a team-high 1,101 receiving yards and 10 touchdown catches. He ranks 10th among all FBS players in both receiving yards and touchdowns. His impact was felt the most late in the season, when he had 36 catches for 543 yards and five touchdowns in Arizona State’s final four games.

The Sun Devils’ next-leading wide receiver, Xavier Guillory, has 291 yards and three touchdowns this season.
