The Oscars were pretty crazy on Sunday night. And you may wonder what baseball has to do with the biggest and most prestigious film awards show of the entire season.

Truthfully, not much. But there is one really fantastic connection. Mahershala Ali won his very first Oscar for his supporting role in the film “Moonlight,” which is awesome on its own. But Ali is an Oakland, Calif., native, and a huge fan of the Oakland Athletics. He even arranged a screening of “Moonlight” (which eventually won the Best Picture award) for Athletics players.

But seeing Athletics fan Ali win an Oscar inspired Athletics pitcher and film buff John Axford. He tweeted at the team’s Twitter account and asked a very important question.

Great idea, right? Have Ali triumphantly come back to his home city and throw the first pitch? Stupendous! Axford probably didn’t expect an immediate response, but that’s essentially what he got from Oakland president Dave Kaval.

This wouldn’t be Ali’s first time throwing out the first pitch. He did it in August 2016, when most people knew him from his role in the Netflix series “House of Cards.”

This time, he’ll have a little more hardware to bring with him when he throws out that first pitch. And Athletics pitcher Sean Doolittle is ready to help.

How considerate!
