Joaquin Niemann picks up first career win in dominant fashion at The Greenbrier

Joaquin Niemann didn’t waste any time out on the golf course this season.

The 20-year-old cruised to a dominant six-stroke win on Sunday at A Military Tribute at The Greenbrier in West Virginia, picking up his first career win in the inaugural event of the 2019-20 season.

“My game was feeling great, and mentally (it) was awesome,” Niemann said. “I was just feeling like I was going to win this tournament since the first day. I was in a really good mindset.”

Niemann entered the final round with a comfortable two-shot lead over the field, and started the day steady — firing a 1-under 33 on the front nine.

That’s when he took off.

Niemann carded six birdies on the back nine on Sunday to finish with a 6-under 64, one of which was the result of an extremely well-read putt on the 13th green.

After making bogey on the par-3 15th, Niemann then drained three straight birdies to finish out his round and claim his first career win.

“The emotions on the last couple holes was just crazy … As a kid, I was dreaming of these moments,” Niemann said. “Just making those putts on the last three holes was unbelievable. I just couldn’t resist it. It wasn’t me, I just fist-pumped.”

Tom Hoge and Richy Werenski tied for second on Sunday at 15-under, while Brian Harman, Harris English and Nate Lashley came in at 14-under.

Niemann recorded four top-10 finishes last season, his first on the PGA Tour — including back-to-back T5 finishes at the Travelers Championship and the Rocket Mortgage Classic. He failed to make the cut at the PGA Championship and at The Open Championship, the only two major championships he participated in, though did advance to the first two stops in the FedExCup Playoffs. After a T31 finish at the BMW Championship, however, Niemann just narrowly missed qualifying for the Tour Championship.

Niemann is now just the third player born outside of the United States in the past 95 years to win on the PGA Tour before turning 21, joining Seve Ballestros and Rory McIlroy.
