Jerry Seinfeld's 'anthill' analogy for New York's response to COVID is perfect: 'Let's get back to work'

Jerry Seinfeld appeared on Sunday’s 60 Minutes to talk about the city that he loves, New York. The largest city in the U.S. was hit hard in the early stages of the COVID-19 outbreak, and as a result, businesses are struggling and residents are leaving.

Entrepreneur and author James Altucher wrote about the city’s struggles in a blog published in LinkedIn titled “NYC Is Dead Forever. Here’s Why.” Upon reading the blog, Seinfeld wrote a rebuttal, which was published as an op-ed in The New York Times.

“I have nothing against that guy,” said Seinfeld. “He's fine. I didn't like that nobody was rebutting it. Then I realized, ‘Oh, I guess that's my job.’ Somebody — a real New Yorker — has to answer this.”

In the rebuttal, Seinfeld refers to Altucher as a “putz” and suggests he “shut up,” while also outlining reasons why he thinks the city will be fine. And while sitting down with 60 Minutes’ Jon Wertheim, he doubled-down with an analogy for the struggling city.

“When you were a kid, remember kicking over the anthill?” asked Seinfeld. “That's what just happened to us. They just kicked over the whole anthill. And what do the ants do? [imitating an ant] ‘All right. Hand me the next crumb. Let's get back to work!’”

60 Minutes airs Sundays at 7 p.m. on CBS.
