Camila Mendes and Jenna Ortega have become two of Hollywood’s most popular leading ladies, thanks to their projects Wednesday, Riverdale, You and Do Revenge. Now, they are getting ready to join forces with Danny Ramirez, known for his roles in Top Gun: Maverick and The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, to headline production company A24’s latest movie.

The film, entitled Alba, will be produced by Margot Robbie’s LuckyChap Entertainment company and directed by the award-winning film-maker Francisca Alegria. The script, written by Chelsey Lora, will be an adaptation of the play The House of Bernarda Alba by Frederico García Lorca.

The play explores the lives of women in rural Spain, including 60-year-old Bernarda Alba, who loses her husband. Subsequently, Bernarda and her five daughters start observing an eight-year period of mourning during which no contact with the outside world and men is allowed.

The only exception to the rule is her eldest daughter, Angustias, who is allowed to marry a wealthy man. However, as the wedding approaches, Bernarda struggles to maintain her suffocating grip on her daughters, and the young women rebel against their mother’s demands.

To modernise the story, the film will be set on the outskirts of Miami.

This isn’t the first time the play has been made into a movie. In 1991, a recording of the 1968 production staged by the Royal Court Theatre in London was released as a film.

Filming is expected to begin this summer, according to reports. A24 has already released Midsommar, Everything Everywhere All at Once and Minari. Earlier this year Everything Everywhere All at Once got 11 Oscars nominations, making A24 became the most nominated studio in this year’s Oscars.
