Jalen Hurd opens up about decision that led to transfer from Tennessee

When Tennessee coach Butch Jones announced running back Jalen Hurd was leaving the program, he was vague about the reasons that led to the decision. However, Hurd took to Twitter on Sunday evening to give some insight into his decision and clear up rumors that he and the coaching staff weren’t getting along.

In a lengthy Twitter statement, Hurd noted two things that led to his departure — injuries and the Vols’ offense. Hurd said Tennessee’s read-option scheme wasn’t the best for his skills, but he was hoping there would be opportunity to showcase both his running and pass-catching abilities. Those opportunities did not materialize the way Hurd wanted.

In Hurd’s three seasons with the program, his production in the passing game has diminished. In 2014, Hurd had 35 receptions for 221 yards, he had 22 receptions for 190 yards in 2015, and just 10 catches for 81 yards this season.

Hurd was granted his release from Tennessee, which allows him to attend any school outside of the SEC and any that are not among Tennessee’s future opponents. As of now, if Hurd were to transfer to an FBS program he would have to sit out a season per NCAA transfer rules. However, there is still a possibility Hurd could graduate from Tennessee, which would make him eligible to play immediately as a graduate transfer.
