Jaguars place Gardner Minshew on COVID-19 reserve list

Another starting quarterback has been placed on the COVID-19 reserve list. The Jacksonville Jaguars did so with Gardner Minshew on Sunday, the second straight day a starting quarterback has been placed on the list.

After a promising rookie season, Minshew, 24, enters 2020 as Jacksonville’s starting quarterback. Nick Foles, who the Jaguars signed last offseason, was dealt to the Chicago Bears in March, giving Minshew the chance to prove he can be a full-time starter in the NFL.

Matthew Stafford has also been placed on the COVID-19 reserve list

With the news, Minshew becomes the second starting quarterback to be placed on the COVID-19 reserve list. The Detroit Lions placed quarterback Matthew Stafford, 32, on that list Saturday.

Being placed on the COVID-19 reserve list doesn’t mean either player tested positive for the virus. The list also exists for players who have come in contact with someone who has tested positive for the coronavirus. The NFL will not announce whether a player has tested positive for the virus. It’s unclear how long Minshew and Stafford will remain on the COVID-19 reserve list.

NFL players can opt out of 2020 season

NFL players can opt out of the 2020 season due to concerns over the coronavirus pandemic. Players who don’t want to play this season have until Wednesday to opt out, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter. Minshew and Stafford have given no indication of their plans, though a number of prominent players have already opted out.
