J.R. Smith and family bring home their baby girl after five months in the NICU

J.R. Smith and his family shared some good news on Tuesday. After more than five months in the hospital, his baby girl Dakota got to head home.

The Cleveland Cavaliers guard posted a photo of him and his wife, Jewel, walking out of Hillcrest Hospital with their baby today. The photo was captioned, “We walked in together, we walked out together!”

Dakota was born five months before her scheduled delivery date, and weighed just one pound five days after her birth. The couple announced the early birth on UNINTERRUPTED and posted updates to a blog. One month after Dakota was born, Smith was able to hold her for the first time, and 78 days after her birth, she was able to breathe without tubes.

Smith has posted many updates about his daughter and her time in the neonatal intensive care unit. He even bought flowers for all the mothers who had children in the NICU on Mother’s Day.

Dakota is the youngest of Smith’s three children. Smith will start at shooting guard on Tuesday night in Game 4 of the Eastern Conference finals against the Boston Celtics.
