Islanders sign Derick Brassard to one-year contract

Free agent Derick Brassard has signed a one-year contact with the New York Islanders, the club announced Wednesday.

The terms of the contract were not disclosed, but it is reportedly worth $1.2-million, as per The Athletic’s Arthur Staple.

The 31-year-old split the 2018-2019 campaign playing 40 games with the Pittsburgh Penguins, 10 games with the Florida Panthers and 20 games with the Colorado Avalanche before becoming a UFA this summer.

Brassard only recorded 23 points in his suitcase season, but has surpassed the 40-point mark five times in his career, including his career best 60-point season with the New York Rangers in 2014-15.

Now a veteran forward, Brassard began his career with the Columbus Blue Jackets after he was selected sixth overall in the 2006 NHL Draft. After playing parts of six seasons in Columbus, tallying 169 points in 309 games, Brassard was traded to the Rangers where a change of scenery sparked production.

Brassard went on to put up 174 points, plus another 44 in the postseason over a four-year stint with the Blueshirts. After New York, Brassard spent almost two full seasons with the Ottawa Senators before he bounced around from Pittsburgh, to Florida and eventually ended up in Colorado.

In 786 regular season games, Brassard has scored 176 goals and 451 points, while adding another 60 points in 99 playoff games.

Joining the Islanders, Brassard will stack up in the third-line center role behind Mathew Barzal and Brock Nelson.
