With one of the best rookie seasons in recent memory, Islanders centre Mathew Barzal is taking home the 2017-18 Calder Trophy as the NHL’s most outstanding first-year pro.

The rookie made a huge impact as he was able to quickly emerge as the Islanders number two centre behind John Tavares. His combination of speed and patience made him must-watch hockey whenever the puck was on his stick.

Barzal beat out Brock Boeser of the Vancouver Canucks and Clayton Keller of the Arizona Coyotes en route to earning the honour.

It is nearly impossible to argue that the Isles youngster was not deserving of the award. His 85 points matched Evgeni Malkin for the most by a rookie since 2006, and his 63 assists are tied with Sidney Crosby as the most in a player’s first year since 1994.

The Coquitlam, BC native also became the first rookie in 100 years to record three five-point games.

Barzal was selected with the 16th pick of the 2015 NHL Draft, a pick which was traded to the Islanders by the Edmonton Oilers.
