Islanders' goalie Mason McDonald named to Team Canada

Charlottetown Islanders' goaltender Mason McDonald has been chosen as one of players to represent Canada at 2016 World Junior Championship in Helsinki, Finland from Dec. 26 until Jan. 5.

Hockey Canada and the Canadian Hockey League announced Monday the list of 30 players invited to Canada's National Junior Team Selection Camp.

Only 2 goaltenders were selected, meaning Islanders' McDonald, along with MacKenzie Blackwood of the Barrie Colts will be in goal for Team Canada.

"McDonald's selection marks the first time in franchise history of both the Charlottetown Islanders and the PEI Rocket that a player will represent Canada at the World Junior Championships," Islanders' manager Grant Sonier said in a written release Tuesday.

The Halifax-born 19-year-old was drafted by the Calgary Flames in 2014, and is described on the website Hockey'sFuture.com as "unflappable under pressure. Pairing a big frame with great mobility in the crease gives McDonald the foundation to be a special prospect."

In total the selection roster includes two goaltenders, 11 defensemen and 17 forwards. Canada's final roster for the 2016 IIHF World Junior Championship in Helsinki will include 22 players, and will be finalized by Dec. 25.

Canada will be looking to win a second straight gold medal. The team opens its schedule on Boxing Day against the United States.
