Isiah Thomas has All-Star MVP trophy returned after theft from high school

Isiah Thomas’ 1984 NBA All-Star Game MVP trophy has been returned after seeing it pop up on the site of an auction house.

The Detroit Pistons Hall of Famer posted a picture of himself holding the trophy on Friday, thanking Heritage Auctions and Twitter for the trophy’s safe return.

Thomas had originally called out the auction house after it announced the trophy was up for bidding on Aug. 10. Per Thomas, the trophy was stolen from his old high school, where he had loaned it, in 2019 when his former coach, Gene Pingatore, died.

Heritage Auctions promptly took down the trophy from its site after reaching out to Thomas, law enforcement and the high school. It released a statement saying it does not sell stolen merchandise and investigates any claims that it is selling something illegally obtained.

A few weeks later, the trophy was back in Thomas’ hands. However, the status of other things stolen from Thomas’ high school, including his Hall of Fame plaque, still remains unclear.
