Is an unofficial AAF title as good as ACC, SEC, national championships? Steve Spurrier knows

Steve Spurrier never officially won the Alliance of American Football championship as the head coach of the Orlando Apollos, but that didn’t stop him from getting a ring. Now he’s considering its place with the others.

The Apollos had a league-best 7-1 record when the AAF abruptly shut down on April 2, two months after its debut. Spurrier decided his team was the champion and last month the team employees all chipped in to buy the coach an AAF championship ring.

It means just as much to the collegiate coaching legend as his conference championships with Duke and Florida.

"The Alliance? Gosh, I tell you what. I tell people I put that right there with one ACC, seven SEC and one Alliance championship," Spurrier told USA Today Sports.

Spurrier’s Duke squad won the ACC title in 1989. He then left for Florida, where the Gators won SEC titles in 1990, ’91, ’93-’96 and 2000.

How’s it stack up against a national championship, which Spurrier and the Gators won in 2007?

"I guess the national is a little bigger than all of them. But as far as conferences, I take that one right along with those."

Fair enough. Natty, then everything else is a good ranking.
