Prince William created the Earthshot Prize to shine the spotlight on solutions to help save the planet. But as guests step onto the green carpet tonight, they are also taking part in an event which has its own sustainable credentials.

Everything from the catering to the light fixtures to the transport has been designed specifically to be environmentally friendly for the event at the MGM Music Hall at Fenway. On the green carpet, outfits are also expected to be reused or recycled.

“Sustainability considerations are factored into every aspect of the production from the highest level right through to the teams and crews working on the ground,” the Earthshot Prize said in a statement. The green carpet has three acres of plants which are a mixture of evergreen and deciduous trees, with all flowers grown within 100 miles of the venue. Earthshot says that the plants will be donated to community organizations following the event and the pots will be recycled or donated.

Guests posing on the carpet will be transported by electric or hybrid vehicles, and the BBC has only flown out 10 of their 150-strong crew to Boston. The rest, Earthshot says, have been hired locally. In addition, all crew coming from NYC to Boston have been asked to take the train.

Catering will be vegetarian or vegan, single use plastics have been banned and lighting fixtures will be LED battery-operated.

Kensington Palace released some behind the scenes images today taken during a rehearsal for the awards last night. William and Kate have packed a lot into their three day visit to Boston and have been greeted by large and cheering crowds at most venues, despite the fact that the trip started against the backdrop of a damaging Buckingham Palace controversy.

Tonight, five Earthshot Prize winners, chosen from a shortlist of 15 finalists, will each receive £1 million to expand their innovation. Prince William launched the awards because he wanted to approach the challenges facing the climate with optimism and he wanted to be able to look his children in the eye to say he had done everything he could for the planet. He was, he says, inspired by President John F Kennedy's Moonshot to reach the seemingly impossible goal of landing a man on the moon.
