Inside the chaos of a Raptors pre-game huddle

When it comes to performing to the best of their abilities, the 2018-19 Toronto Raptors have made it clear that they are pretty good at what they do.

With the exception of a small three-game losing streak in the middle of November, they’ve essentially been unstoppable this season. Their record of 20-5 is the best in the NBA and puts them atop the Eastern Conference standings, a perch that they’ve become quite comfortable on.

However, despite their chemistry on the hardwood, things don’t always go as smoothly during their pre-game huddles. During a recent episode of Inside the Green Room with Danny Green, the three-point enthusiast and teammate Pascal Siakam decided to let fans into exactly what is going on when the guys are chatting in a circle before tip-off.

“This huddle is messed up, man,” said Siakam with a hearty chuckle.

“It’s not messed up, it’s just sometimes we have miscommunication,” replied Green with a bit of a defensive tone.

As one of the veterans on the team and a player with an NBA championship under his belt, Green has been very valuable on and off the floor since being traded to Toronto alongside Kawhi Leonard. The 31-year-old shooting guard is often looked upon for guidance from his peers. Yet, figuring out when to communicate that wisdom, especially during pre-game huddles, has been difficult at times.

And third-year pro Siakam gets to enjoy a front-row seat to all of the madness.

“First of all, I don’t ever know who’s supposed to talk,” said Siakam. “So, Danny will start and then you’re gonna hear JV start talking and then Serge…”

“And they’re just repeating the same message?” asked host Harrison Sanford.

“No, it’s different things,” continued Siakam in between laughs. “Like, we don’t really know what’s going on… And there’s different types of accents. You know, we have our American, we got an African out there, we got JV coming in with the Lithuania, a little European-style. So, it’s like, it’s just too much.”

Thankfully, it sounds like things are getting figured out.

“So, me and JV have talked,” said Green. “We’ve spoken about this and we’re going to go every other game.”

Unfortunately, that doesn’t address what has become a bit of an elephant in the room. (Or ‘in the huddle’, if you will).

“Serge just jumps in sometimes,” said Green with a smile. “We don’t know why. But, he just does.

“I like Serge for timeouts. We’ll give him those.”

“Serge!” exclaimed Siakam with his trademark grin while looking into the camera. “Timeouts. Only!”

If some minor communication struggles before games are the biggest worry for the Raptors right now, you’d like to think that things are going pretty well in Toronto.
