Injury update on Clemson wide receiver Bryant Wesco after Wake Forest game
The Clemson football team was down one of its most talented wide receivers during a 49-14 win over Wake Forest on Saturday afternoon.
True freshman wide receiver Bryant Wesco Jr. was not among the 80 players who traveled for the Tigers’ road game and missed the first game of his Tigers career.
Clemson coach Dabo Swinney provided an update postgame on Wesco, who is currently working as a co-starter at outside receiver for the Tigers and was second on the team in receiving yards entering Saturday.
“He rolled his ankle, so he wasn’t able to go either,” Swinney said. “He’s day to day, so hopefully we’ll get him back next week.”
Swinney said Wesco hurt his ankle in last week’s road win at Florida State during the team’s two-minute drill right before halftime. Wesco caught a 10-yard pass on that drive and rolled his ankle while angling out of bounds, Swinney said.
He didn’t record any stats the rest of the Oct. 5 game.
“He played the whole game,” against Florida State, Swinney said of Wesco. “He finished, but he was pretty sore the next day.”
Tigernet reported Saturday that Wesco had been in a walking boot earlier this week. The former top 50 national recruit leads Clemson with 23.8 yards per catch this year.
He’d also started four straight games at outside receiver. With Wesco out, Clemson started veterans Antonio Williams and Troy Stellato and true freshman T.J. Moore at its three receiver spots in the 35-point win over the Demon Deacons.
Tyler Brown injury update
Swinney also had news postgame on sophomore wide receiver Tyler Brown (ankle), who was dressed for the game but did not play a snap against Wake Forest.
“Our intention was: Tyler Brown was ready to play if we needed him to win the game,” Swinney said. “But we’re going to probably shut him down tomorrow. Instead of day to day, he’s probably gonna be week to week.”
Brown suffered a high ankle sprain on the opening drive of Clemson’s Week 2 game against App State and hasn’t been healthy since. Brown missed the following game (NC State) and played 22 snaps against Stanford and 17 against Florida State.
“He’s kind of plateaued, and we just need to try to see if we can get him over the hump with one game left and an open date,” Swinney said of Brown.
The Tigers (5-1, 4-0 ACC) return home to face Virginia next Saturday (noon, ACCN). After that, Clemson has the second of two scheduled off weeks before hosting Louisville on Saturday Nov. 2.
