Indiana mom facing charges after her 3-year-old child gets shot in the head

EVANSVILLE, Ind. – Police arrested an Indiana woman Wednesday night after her 3-year-old child reportedly suffered a gunshot wound to the head.

The woman, identified by police as Porsha Walker, is set to appear in Vanderburgh County Circuit Court Thursday afternoon, according to court records. Walker is currently being held at the Vanderburgh County jail on three preliminary charges:

  • Neglect of a dependent resulting in serious bodily injury, a Level 3 felony.

  • Theft of a firearm, a Level 5 felony.

  • Dealing methamphetamine, a Level 3 felony.

According to Walker's arrest affidavit, officers were dispatched at 6:15 p.m. Wednesday to Ascension St. Vincent hospital, about three hours southwest of Indianapolis.

The call was in reference to "a 3-year-old who had been shot in the head." The affidavit states the wound appeared to be "non-life threatening."

The child's mother, Walker, reportedly told police the child accidentally shot himself with a handgun Walker found in her backyard.

"Walker stated she brought the gun into her home with her three children present," Officer Jack Spencer wrote in the affidavit. "Walker stated that while she was attending her other children, the 3-year-old got the gun and shot himself in the head."

According to Spencer, Walker waited between seven and 10 minutes before dialing 911. Instead, Walker allegedly contacted family members and delayed taking the child to a hospital.

Spencer said Walker gave the EPD consent to search her home for the purple-and-black handgun she claimed to have found in her backyard. While conducting the search, officers reported finding two large bags of methamphetamine and a digital scale inside a child's bedroom.

According to Spencer, the bags contained more than half a pound of methamphetamine.

Investigators reported locating the handgun on top of a kitchen cabinet. In the affidavit, Spencer stated the gun had been reported stolen.

During an interview with detectives, Walker reportedly denied having any knowledge of the methamphetamine.
