Identifying the players Jose Mourinho will want to bring to Tottenham

Jose Mourinho has reportedly been told that he will no have money to spend on players at Spurs this January, and he has stated his intention to work with the current players and academy.

However, the Portuguese is the highest spending manager of all time, with around $1.4bn spent on players, so it’s only a matter of time before he demands the check book.

Here’s the players Mou is most likely to target, starting with Paulo Dybala. The Argentine came close to signing for Spurs in the summer and several outlets believe Mourinho is targeting him as the perfect accompaniment to Harry Kane.

With Christian Eriksen likely to leave for free in the summer, Dybala could be a significant upgrade at No.10—but he won’t come cheap.

Sporting Lisbon attacking midfielder Bruno Fernandes is also on Mourinho’s radar—as they share an agent in Jorge Mendes.

The highly rated 25-year-old would make a great second striker, and might be less costly than Dybala, but is likely to be wanted by a host of top European clubs in the coming months.

The other premium attacking player Mou could stump for is Gareth Bale, whose relationship with Real Madrid is strained to say the least.

The Welshman is already a club hero and his reintroduction, possibly next summer, would truly get fans onside with the manager.

It’s looking like Eric Dier may be Mourinho’s defensive midfield screen, but Mourinho has already signed Nemanja Matic twice, and the Serbian has fallen out of favour at Old Trafford.

The 31-year-old could go relatively cheaply, given his age and current stature.

Where Spurs could really use reinforcement, however, is in defence—particularly as Jan Vertonghen and Toby Alderweireld are out of contract this summer.

Mourinho bid £95 for Napoli’s Kalidou Koulibaly at United, but it’s not likely Spurs will give him that kind of money for a centre-back.

Instead, Benfica’s Ruben Dias might be a target. In fact, the 22-year-old could be at the very top of Mourinho’s wishlist. The Portuguese starlet is very highly rated, and he also shares Mourinho’s agent, Jorge Mendes. If Dias doesn’t come in January, he’s a highly likely candidate for a summer arrival.
