Fresh off the finale of The Leftovers, writer-producer Damon Lindelof is in talks to develop an adaptation of the 1985 Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons comic-book series Watchmen for HBO. Now, while we think the 2009 Zack Snyder film was cast pretty perfectly, we put together a list of the ideal cast members we’d want to see in HBO’s Watchmen.
We think that Leftovers star Justin Theroux would be great as the clever yet vulnerable Nite Owl, played by Patrick Wilson in the film. Everyone knows that both Lindelof and HBO love working with actors they’ve used before.
It really doesn’t get much better than Jackie Earle Haley’s portrayal of Rorschach, but we’d like see Pablo Schreiber, from The Wire and American Gods, give the role a shot. The comedian is charming, and funny, but man does he have a dark side. In the film, he was played by Jeffrey Dean Morgan, but Lost‘s Harold Perrineau could slip into that smiley face and cigar easily.
In the movie, Carla Gugino played the original Silk Spectre, but Deadwood‘s Kim Dickens has proved she can handle being the lone strong female among a crew of uncivilized men. Silk Spectre’s daughter, Silk Spectre II, was played in the film by Malin Akerman, but we want to see Emilia Clarke of Game of Thrones kicking some butt in the role.
Matthew Goode played the charismatic, basically flawless Ozymandias in the film version, but we think Nicolaj Coster-Waldau, another Game of Thrones star, has what it takes to fill those shoes.
Dr. Manhattan was the most difficult character to bring to the big screen, but Billy Crudup pulled it off brilliantly. For the TV version, we’d love to see Jon Hamm play the superpowered naked, blue scientist.
