Hugo Lloris ‘shares this moment of pain’ with Harry Kane after England penalty miss
Hugo Lloris said he “shares this moment of pain” with Tottenham team-mate Harry Kane after his penalty miss against France.
Kane blazed a late spot-kick over the bar as England crashed out of the World Cup with a 2-1 defeat in their quarter-final on Saturday night.
After the game, Lloris sympathised with his Spurs team-mate Kane.
“Of course we’re happy because it’s a key moment,” said the France captain. “But the man that I am is saddened because he is a teammate that I have known for a long time, a man that I respect enormously and someone who took responsibility at an important time.
“Unfortunately for him and the England national team, he put it over and fortunately for the France team, because it was a turning point.
“I know he is strong and that he will overcome, but I can only share this moment of pain with him. The English team put in a big performance and the French players deserve credit.”
France face Morocco in the semi-finals after they beat Portugal.
Lloris, who is aiming to become the first captain to lift back-to-back World Cups, added: “We have to savour this moment in the dressing room. It’s a big moment. It’s England.
“We did a very good job. The French players deserve the credit. We have to prepare for the next battle.”
