HQ's Scott Rogowsky proves himself a baseball savant on 'Old Baseball Cards'

You know Scott Rogowsky as the host of the wildly popular mobile trivia game HQ, but did you know he’d probably also win a trivia game about baseball players from the ’80s and ’90s? As Rogowsky proves on this week’s episode of “Old Baseball Cards” — Yahoo Sports’ baseball-card driven nostalgia show — his knowledge is deep and not just for the stars of the game. He knows his commons too.

If you’re one of the million-plus people playing HQ each night, you may know that Rogowsky likes baseball. He’ll often reference random baseball players on the show, whether he’s calling that night’s cash prize “Five Thousand Dylan Bundys” or calling himself Seth HQ-go (as is Mets pitcher Seth Lugo). But you might not have known this: Rogowsky used to work for Topps. In fact, he used to pick the photos for baseball cards. That’s just part of what gives him the savant-level knowledge you see on “Old Baseball Cards.”

On this week’s episode, we dip into the late ’90s: As Rogowsky opens 1996 Topps Stadium Club, he finds a special insert the likes of which we’ve never seen on the show before. He also shares his own pack-opening ritual, recalls meeting Mickey Mantle as a kid and seems to own a piece of baseball memorabilia related to every card he pulls.

If you’re charmed by Rogowsky, you can obviously see him hosting HQ most days, but he’s getting more exposure in the baseball realm these days. He’s hosting “Mets Live” on Wednesday and he has his own card in Topps’ upcoming 2018 Allen & Ginter set. You should also check out his “Running Late with Scott Rogowosky” live show, which usually features other comics and musical acts. There’s an installment Tuesday night in New York City that features Neko Case, David Cross and fellow baseball enthusiast (and Royals fans) Paul Rudd. Maybe they’ll talk about the 2015 World Series. Or for Scott’s sake, maybe not.
