Hot Stove Digest: Orioles reportedly withdraw offer to Mark Trumbo

OFF THE TABLE: It’s beginning to look like 2016’s home run king Mark Trumbo will have a new home in 2017.
According to MASN’s Roch Kubatko, the Baltimore Orioles have reportedly pulled their four-year offer to the free agent slugger “off the table,” meaning a change of heart would be required for him to return.
Of course, savvy fans are pointing out that the Orioles used this same technique with Chris Davis last offseason, before changing course and agreeing on a seven-year, $161 million deal. It’s always possible that will happen again, though based on Kubatko’s report Baltimore will have to up their offer significantly to get in the same ballpark. It’s said the two sides have agreed on four years, but have “vastly different salary expectations.”
Trumbo has also drawn interest from the Indians, Mariners, Rangers and Rockies this offseason, but there’s no indication he’s close to a decision. [MASN]
POSSIBILITIES: Despite signing veteran catcher Welington Castillo, the door is still open for a Matt Wieters return to Baltimore. [@JonHeyman]
NOTHING IMMINENT: Brian Dozier to the Los Angeles Dodgers is still in play, but those close to the talks believe there’s “nothing imminent” on that front. [@DWolfsonKSTP]
LOCKED IN: The Chicago White Sox avoided arbitration with first baseman Jose Abreu, signing him to a one-year deal worth $$10.825M for 2017.
Abreu previously opted out of the final three years and $34M remaining on his guaranteed contract to allow his salary to be dictated by the arbitration process. He ended up settling for slightly less than the $11.667M he earned in 2016, which comes as somewhat of a surprise. Had he allowed the process to play out, perhaps he could have received a token raise. As it is, he still stands a chance to come out ahead with a productive 2017 season.
Abreu is also believed to be on the trading block this winter. He’d be under team control through 2019, which will definitely have some appeal. By the same token, the White Sox will again ask for a big return as they did with Chris Sale and Adam Eaton before parting with the Cuban slugger. [@philgrogers]
NEW ACE?: The Padres have agreed to a one-year contract with veteran right-hander Jhoulys Chacin.
It’s an interesting fit, as the Padres need arms with James Shields, Drew Pomeranz, Andrew Cashner and Tyson Ross all out of the picture. Chacin should have an opportunity to eat innings and reestablish his value after making only 37 combined starts over the last three season. With that in mind, FanRag Sports’ Jon Heyman says Chacin chose opportunity over money, leaving significant money on the table to accept the Padres $1.75M offer.
Also worth noting, Chacin is the only player on the Padres roster currently scheduled to earn $1M or more this season. [@sdutdennislin]
AW SHUCKS: The Twins have signed outfielder J.B. Shuck to a minor league deal with an invitation to spring training. Shuck, 29, hit .205/.248/.299 in 241 plate appearances for the White Sox in 2016. [@RhettBollinger]
