Chris Vengyl may officially hold the unofficial title of ‘Best Hockey Dad Ever.’

When he set out to build a rink for his son, Nick, in their Chicago suburb this winter, your average ice patch didn’t emerge — a hockey palace did.

“I have a tendency to do things a little overboard,” he told ABC 7 Chicago while skating on its ice recently.

You think?

First of all, it’s enormous: 135 by 50 feet, to be exact. To put that into context, NHL rinks are 200 by 85 feet. On top of its size, the outdoor arena (you might as well call it what it is) has boards, a warming hut and quite the impressive lighting system.

Assisted by his friend Scott Cortwright, a carpenter by trade, Vengyl’s vision became a reality. And although this isn’t the first time the Vengyl family has erected a rink in their backyard, this year’s edition was definitely the most ambitious.

He thought it was a crazy idea at first,” said Cortwright to Meghan Kluth of ABC 7 Chicago. “It’s been amazing ever since and it keeps growing every year.”

Nick hasn’t been the only one to benefit from the the efforts of his father and Cortwright, though. Due to the rink’s open door policy, it has quickly become the place to be day and night.

At any given moment, there are dozens of kids from the area enjoying the ice. Vengyl even purchased a few extra pairs of skates to ensure that anyone can hop on and have some fun.

Based on all he’s done for his son and community, it’s going to take quite the performance to wrestle that unofficial title out of Vengyl’s hands.
